Arusha works year-round as a base. June to October and December to February are the dry windows, best for Mount Meru treks and clear Kilimanjaro views. The long rains in April and May make the forest trails muddy but the coffee slopes are at their greenest.

FAQs

Is Arusha worth spending time in, or just a stopover?

It rewards a day or two. Arusha National Park, Lake Duluti, the coffee farms and the Maasai markets are all within an hour, and none of them need a long drive or park-circuit fees.

Should I climb Mount Meru before Kilimanjaro?

It is the best acclimatisation in Tanzania. Three or four days on Meru at 4,566 m measurably improves Kilimanjaro summit odds, and the walk itself is more scenic than most of the Kili routes.

How far is Arusha from the main parks?

Tarangire and Lake Manyara are around two hours, Ngorongoro three to four, and the Serengeti six to eight by road or an hour by light aircraft from Arusha Airport.

Where do I fly into?

Kilimanjaro International (JRO) is 45 minutes from Arusha and takes the international flights. Arusha Airport (ARK) is in town and handles the light aircraft to the parks.
