4,566 m and Africa's fifth-highest peak — a serious trek and the best acclimatisation before Kilimanjaro.
A crater lake ringed by forest, walkable in a morning, with over 130 bird species.
Plantations on the Meru foothills where you pick, pulp, roast and drink in the same afternoon.
Momella Lakes, Ngurdoto Crater and the largest giraffe population density in Tanzania.
Livestock and bead markets that run on a weekly rotation across the villages.
Paddle the Momella Lakes among flamingos, hippos and grazing buffalo.
Arusha works year-round as a base. June to October and December to February are the dry windows, best for Mount Meru treks and clear Kilimanjaro views. The long rains in April and May make the forest trails muddy but the coffee slopes are at their greenest.
It rewards a day or two. Arusha National Park, Lake Duluti, the coffee farms and the Maasai markets are all within an hour, and none of them need a long drive or park-circuit fees.
It is the best acclimatisation in Tanzania. Three or four days on Meru at 4,566 m measurably improves Kilimanjaro summit odds, and the walk itself is more scenic than most of the Kili routes.
Tarangire and Lake Manyara are around two hours, Ngorongoro three to four, and the Serengeti six to eight by road or an hour by light aircraft from Arusha Airport.
Kilimanjaro International (JRO) is 45 minutes from Arusha and takes the international flights. Arusha Airport (ARK) is in town and handles the light aircraft to the parks.
